From the Archives: The Founding Documents of Vilnius University
On April 1, marking the anniversary of Vilnius University, the Lithuanian State Historical Archives extends its congratulations and invites you to explore the University’s founding documents.
Vilnius University, one of the oldest universities in Central and Eastern Europe, is celebrating the 447th anniversary of its establishment. On April 1, 1579, King Stephen Báthory signed a privilege transforming the Vilnius Jesuit College, founded in 1570, into a university. On October 30, 1579, Pope Gregory XIII issued a papal bull confirming the establishment of Vilnius University.
Today, Vilnius University is the leading center of science and studies in Lithuania, fostering free, creative, and critically thinking individuals. It successfully continues long-standing academic and cultural traditions while adapting and integrating into the intellectual space of Europe and the world.
This is a rare opportunity to see the documents reflecting the founding of the University up close.
