Digitization Plan 2025–2027 Announced by the Lithuanian State Historical Archives
The Lithuanian State Historical Archives has prepared its 2025–2027 Digitization Plan, which outlines the main priorities, scope, and objectives. The plan focuses on the digitization and online publication of vital record books, Revision lists, and the collection of Old Record Books in the Electronic Archives Information System (EAIS).
Guided by the Procedure for the Creation and Management of Digital Content in State Archives, the Archives continues to consistently implement digitization work. The first priority remains the digitization of vital record books, the second - Revision lists and censuses, and the third—project-based digitization to meet the needs and initiatives of cultural and academic institutions.
In 2024, the Archives’ annual digitization capacity reached 500,000 images and remains stable. As of January 1, 2025, 36,029 files (2.6% of all holdings) had been digitized, and 4.09 million images—representing 41.4% of all images available in the EAIS—had been published.
A key challenge is the 42% gap between digitized files and those publicly available in the EAIS. The Archives aims to reduce this gap to no more than 5% by 2027 and to complete the digitization of approximately 3,100 remaining parish register books by the same year.
One of the most important future goals is the digitization of the Old Record Books collection, for which funding and partnership opportunities are currently being sought.
